What Is a Dental Emergency?
A “dental emergency” is something that hurts, bleeds, or is broken and requires urgent professional care as a result. Some adults delay necessary treatment because they are unsure of whether or not they are experiencing a true emergency -- but we urge you to play it safe and always get in touch with us just in case. It’s better safe than sorry when it comes to your smile!
Some of the most common situations we treat as emergencies include:
- A broken tooth
- Toothache or abscess
- Knocked out tooth
- Dislodged tooth
- Something large stuck between teeth
- Broken filling or crown
Your Next Steps
If you or a loved one are experiencing any of the above situations, do not hesitate to call us at Harvey Dental! We will listen to your situation and provide first aid advice to help reduce discomfort and improve the chances of successful treatment.
In general, some steps you should take after a dental emergency include…
- Collect any large broken pieces for possible reattachment
- Store a knocked out tooth in a cup of water or milk to keep its root moist
- Take an over-the-counter pain medication for discomfort
- Apply continuous pressure with a clean gauze or cloth to stop or slow bleeding
- Use an ice pack on the affected cheek in 10- to 15-minute intervals to reduce swelling
In the majority of cases, your dentist is better-equipped to treat a dental emergency promptly than the ER is. However, if you have broken a bone in your jaw or if you are bleeding profusely for more than 10 minutes, you should seek prompt medical attention.
How We Treat Dental Emergencies
The treatment for your urgent situation will depend on the symptoms you are experiencing. A dislodged tooth can usually be reattached if attended to within the first two hours. Whatever the treatment that is right for your smile, you can feel confident that you are on the road to quick recovery when you partner with the emergency dentist Windsor trusts!
